Using the data of 33 Taiwanese banks from the second quarter of 2006 to the second quarter of 2023, this thesis studies banks’ productivities and their relations to bank profitability. Applying a methodology similar to that used in Egan(2022), it computes banks’ deposit, interest-bearing-asset, and fee productivities, and examines the degrees to which they can explain banks’ return on assets(ROA). The empirical results show that fee productivity is the most important source of profitability for Taiwan's banking industry, followed by interest-bearing-asset productivity, while deposit productivity has no significant impact on ROA. These results still hold after the synergies between different types of productivities are considered. The results in this thesis are different from those on the U.S. banking industry in Egan(2022), which may reflect the differences between the banking industries of these two countries. |
