"Dream" is an important theme in Chinese classical novels. The dreams in the novels reflect people''s inner desires and anxieties, respond to expectations of reality, and even play a role in predicting the future. Dream narratives are closely related to social phenomena, helping people deal with ethical issues and conveying the author''s moral judgments. This article explores how Chinese dream culture is manifested in novels, why writers choose "dreams" as a narrative medium, and how the tradition of dream narration has been inherited and modified. The article takes "Five Relationships" (ruler and subject, father and son, husband and wife, brothers, and friends) as the main axis and uses Ming and Qing short stories as the research scope. The dream narrative in the novel is placed in the framework of ethical networks for multiple deliberations. In the story of the ruler and subject relationship, the traditional "ruler and subject dream encounter" and the "Heteroglossia in dreams " of the transitional periode will be analyzed to distinguish between the two attitudes of the ruler and the subject. Regarding the chapter on father-son ethics, the dreams of fetal dreams, revenge, searching for relatives, saving relatives, and serving relatives will be analyzed through the two paths of "reward" and "filial piety", and the impact of the view of retribution in dreams and the relationship between heaven and man on parent-child relationships will be discussed. In the chapter on husband and wife ethics, the "love dream" of the marriage and love theme, the dream of separation of husband and wife, the dream of punishing a shrewish wife, and the dream of dream writing will be discussed, and the reflection of dream narratives on gender issues and the narrative intention of "the ethics of a proper husband and wife" will be explored. In the chapter on brother ethics, the dreams of deceased brothers and sisters expressing love, repairing or perfecting brotherly relationships will be discussed. In the chapter on friend ethics, the "dead friend" who died because of a friend''s dream in San Yen and the dream of parting in Liaozhai Zhiyi will be discussed to interpret two completely different views of friendship. Based on the above, the author attempts to deliberate: In the dream narrative of Ming and Qing novels, how will the traditional Five Relationships order operate? Dream narratives often attach importance to the interrelation of reality and illusion. How do the ethical views of reality/dreams interact? During the Ming and Qing dynasties, which experienced dynastic changes and turbulent times, dreams in novels, while still continuing the common themes of the previous generation, also demonstrated diverse values. How do the ethical views of novel dreams respond to the issues of the times? By exploring these issues, we hope to delve deeper into the ethical implications of dream narratives in Ming and Qing short stories. |
