In this thesis, I reexamined the hypothesis stated by Professor Shi-Qiang Huang, who believed that the prehistoric people of the Zhishanyan (芝山岩) culture of the Zhishanyan site at Taipei (Neolithic Era 4000-3000 B.P.) originated directly from the archaeological culture of Zhejiang (浙江) and Fujian (福建). However, the only evidence he provided in the report “The Neolithic Site of Zhishanyan” is the resemblance of painted and black-slipped pottery between the Zhishanyan site and the southeastern coastal regions of mainland China. Moreover, the pottery technology and tradition of the Zhishanyan culture was still vague. My M.A. thesis, “Pottery Technical System of Zhishanyan culture and Yuanshan Culture: A Synthetic Archaeological Research,” advised by Prof. Maa-Ling Chen, seeks to solve the ambiguity of the pottery technical system of the Zhishanyan culture along with the Yuanshan (圓山) culture (3500-2300 B.P.), which was discovered in the upper strata and used as a comparison of the Zhishanyan culture in the lower strata at the site. Taking visual investigation, petrographic and chemical analysis as a synthetic approach, I figured out the paste recipes and technological aspects of pottery manufacturing process of both archaeological cultures through the analytical framework presented by Valentine Roux in the article “Identifying Social Entities at a Macro-Regional Level: Chalcolithic Ceramics of South Levant as a Case Study.” The results indicated that although the manufacturing techniques of these two archaeological cultures show differences in terms of paste recipes, forming, finishing, decoration and firing conditions, they still shared some common conceptions of exploiting local resources. As potters of two cultures gather raw materials in the same area of the volcanic region near the site, this indicates that the human interactions of prehistoric people of Zhishanyan culture are more complicated than researchers used to think. We should not perceive these people simply as a foreign community that migrated from southeast China and neglect the diversity and flexibility of how they adapted and situated themselves in this site of northern Taiwan. |
