Worldwide BL (Boys’ Love) fans indulged in male-male romance genre have formed the BL fandom, a subculture which is unique but not fully researched. This study explores BL fans’ reading selection behavior and information behavior, especially their information encountering experiences through Information World Mapping (IWM)—an art-based participatory method to elicit BL fans’ social information world. Twenty-six participants were recruited. During the semi-structured interviews, BL fans were invited to draw a map regarding how they find, share, use, and store BL-related information, as well as how they encounter relevant information. In order to better interpret BL fans’ visual discourses, situational analysis was used to approach the rich data collected and unfold people, places, relationships in BL fans’ information world.
The findings of this study show that BL fans’ information worlds richly include people, items, and three major types of relationships (i.e., communicating relationships, engaging relationships, and interacting relationships among people, items and places). BL fans’ reading selection behavior mainly involves seven information activities (i.e., search/retrieve, monitor, browse, unfold, exchange, dress, and publish). Contextual factors (i.e., user-related factors, information-related factors, and environment-related factors) foster BL fans’ information encountering. Information encountering occurred when BL fans conducting different non-BL information activities and BL information activities. And information encountering experiences help BL fans acquire new books and new places to find BL-related information. Erdelez and Makri’s model of refined information encountering process was also used to discuss the findings.
Based on the findings, this study suggests that public libraries and bookstores better utilize social media or relevant forums to promote BL information and use flexible labels to highlight BL works. This way may help increase the chances of information encountering for BL fans. Reflections on the IWM technique and future research suggestions were also discussed.
