Butyric acid, as one kind of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and is mainly secreted as a metabolic product of fibrous food by the bacteria in the periodontal pocket/pulpal-root canal. It has been reported to be elevated to significant concentrations in the contaminated root canal systems, as well as in the gingival crevicular fluid. Higher SCFAs are confirmed to be significantly associated with the occurrence and progression of pulpitis/apical periodontitis and periodontitis. Human vascular endothelial cells are considered to play an important role in angiogenesis, inflammation, and healing of dental pulp and periodontal tissue. However, whether butyrate induces inflammatory responses, autophagy, coagulation, and vascular calcification in endothelial cells and its role in the pathogenesis of pulpitis and periodontitis has been rarely studied and discussed, and is also an important objective of this study.
