The spatial pattern of Paiwan old settlements were characterized by social relations such as kinship and hierarchy, as a reflection of the social culture and daily life of the Paiwan’s house society. The practice of indoor burials contained the ideology and the meaning of life and death rituals. However, during the Japanese colonial period, under the policy of forced relocation and the prohibiting of indoor burials, the social reproduction process in which social relations were embedded becomes difficult to maintain. Meanwhile, the duplex of dwelling and burial spaces, which were a whole in house society, have been separated. Using the example of the Paiwan Mudan Village and Mudan Cemetery, this study explores the socio-cultural changes that occurred in the face of colonization and modern state governance, as well as the negotiations and interactions of the Mudan people within these contexts. The research framework adopts a post-colonial perspective and utilizes historical archaeology methodology. Through the examination and analysis of the spatial patterns of the Mudan Village settlement and burials, and the use of various data such as historical materials, ethnographies, funerary artifacts, and face-to-face interview, the study presents the negotiation and action of the Mudan people facing colonialism and state governance, as well as the process of the transformation of their socio-cultural traditions. The results of this study show that colonization is a dynamic and bi-directional process that affects and changes the social structure of Mudan people, the form of burials, and the connotation of kinship relationships. However, the practical nature of the old settlements and the agency of Mudan people have allowed for the continuation of crucial elements in their cultural traditions, such as kinship and landscape, being embedded in the spatial patterns. This study demonstrates the socio-cultural aspects of contemporary settlements and communities of indigenous peoples, with the aim of expanding and bridging the issues that can be explored in the study of indigenous old settlements. |
