This study focuses on traceable and organic vegetables to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their wholesale prices and trading volumes. The sample period for this study spans five years, before and after the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic, from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2022.Data of traceable and organic vegetables in Taiwan's wholesale markets are collected, along with the daily confirmed cases data published by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Regression models are used for empirical analysis. Compared to general vegetables, at a 1% significance level, the daily increase in confirmed cases is associated with a 2.589-kilogram increase in the trading volume of traceable vegetables. Similarly, compared to general vegetables, the daily increase in confirmed cases is associated with a 1.694-kilogram increase in the trading volume of organic vegetables.
The empirical results of this study demonstrate that during the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals are pursuing balanced diets to enhance their immune systems, leading to an increased demand for traceable and organic vegetables, resulting in significant changes in their transaction volumes. Based on the findings, it is crucial for the government to strengthen inspections of traceable and organic vegetables sold in the market to ensure the credibility of labels, thus meeting consumer expectations and creating a win-win situation for all parties involved.
