zh_TW
Using the adoption of Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 142 (SFAS 142 hereafter) as an experimental setting, I investigate the effect of SFAS adoption on analyst forecast features. Motivated by the observations that SFAS 142 improves managers’ internal information sets and therefore facilitates management earnings forecasts (e.g., Cheng et al., 2018) by requiring more rigorous impairment tests through exquisite and complicated two-step procedures once a year, thus incorporating more transparent information into the market, this study investigates whether SFAS 142 adoption enhances analyst forecast accuracy and reduces forecast dispersion. Using a difference-in-differences design, I find that firms affected by SFAS 142 experience an improvement in analyst forecast accuracy in the post-SFAS 142 periods. However, I do not find any change in analyst forecast dispersion after SFAS 142 adoption. Furthermore, I also find that firms with weaker governance in the pre-SFAS 142 period experience larger improvements in analyst forecast accuracy. The findings suggest that with improved information sets, financial analysts can make better earnings forecasts.en
