In recent years, rapid degradation and loss of wetlands is found to reduce the habitat of waterbirds worldwide. This situation threatens the survival of waterbirds, and also intensifies the conflicts between humans and waterbirds. Therefore, how to balance the requirement of humans and waterbirds is an issue that needs urgent attention. The Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) is a species of concern in sustainable management of wetland, and studying the habitat use of cormorants is important for its sustainable management. However, little is known about the habitat use of cormorants wintering in East Asia. To investigate the preferences of wintering habitat and its differences in day and night needs of Great Cormorant, I recorded the number of wintering cormorant individuals in 86 inland waters and 387 embankments from November 2020 to March 2021 in Kinmen, Taiwan and collected environmental variables of each sampling plot. I found that area of water surface and forest length along the embankment were the primary factors that affected the individual number of cormorants, and degree of road development was also an important environmental feature that affected the cormorant resting in daytime. The percentage of forest area within 500 m buffer and forest height along the embankment were confirmed to be the key factors that affected the nocturnal habitat use of cormorants. In this study, I suggest that the management of cormorant wintering habitat should give priority to environmental quality of cormorant nocturnal habitat and forest regrowth, maintaining area of water surface and integrity of the waterfront forest zone, and also limiting the development of roads around water body, especially the northeastern embankment, which can provide wind shelter. In order to achieve the core goal of human-bird coexistence, it is important to periodically adjust management strategy by monitoring changes of cormorant habitat use on a long-term basis. The results of this study not only provide background information for assessing regional management and environmental carrying capacity, but also fill the gap in the study of wintering habitat of cormorants in East Asia, which is an indispensable part of the future study on the life cycle of migratory cormorant populations. |
