(Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society, 2020)中,為得分最高的經濟體之一。 According to the National Development Council (n.d.), Taiwan started the transition to an aged society in 1993, became an aged society in 2018, and is expected to transition to a super-aged society in 2025 due to the rapidly declining birth rate and increasing life expectancy. There are some physical and psychological changes associated with old age that may lead to emotional instability and varying degrees of depression. Mental health affects how people think, act and feel. It also has a high correlation with physical health. Research suggests that seniors benefit from supportive social connections and close personal relationships. To encourage seniors to actively participate in society, the Ministry of Education (2006) published a white paper entitled “Toward the Aged Society: Policies on Education for Older Adults.” Since then, hundreds of classes for senior learning have been developed. Taiwan was one of the highest-scoring economies in the Doing Good Index in 2020 (Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society, 2020). It also demonstrated a high proportion of regular policy consultations and participation of social delivery organizations (SDOs) in the social sector through the Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society (CAPS). According to the Ministry of Interior (n.d.), the number of registered institutions for social service and charity increased from 12,630 in 2012 to 16,606 in 2017, thereby demonstrating a growth rate of 31%. To address the environmental and social issues in Taiwan, Cultural Empowerment Company Limited (CE) aims to provide age-friendly farmlands not only to the elders but also to the disadvantaged. The primary objectives behind this strategy are to encourage the adoption of hydroponic techniques and horticultural therapy to increase the social participation of the elders and the disadvantaged (participants) to improve their quality of life. To meet these objectives, CE is looking for financial support from Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds and from Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) enterprises and individuals. ESG is not only a trend but also a necessity now, and CE considers it to be an integral part of its business vision. CE’s business model focuses on environmental and social aspects that include adopting hydroponic farming, which is an environmentally-friendly and sustainable farming technique. It also applies horticultural therapies to help people improve their physical and mental health. To realize its vision, CE uses a circular ecosystem as its business model to work with landlords, participants, and CSR/ESG companies to protect the environment and take care of the elders and the disadvantaged. CE has set up its initial business and demonstration greenhouse site in Dajia, Taichung. In the future, it hopes to expand to the northern part of Taiwan. |
