Abstract: none
Shipping is an industry with a long history, without which trade and global commerce would be impossible. In recent years, the industry has been brought into the spotlight, as it transforms in the face of recent environmental regulations and disruptions from COVID-19. Yet, given the years-long build times for ships, high capital requirements for new-builds or modifications, it is impossible for ship owners to respond to changing conditions with much agility. Therefore, it is crucial for shipping managers to make strategic decisions today that will put them in an advantageous position in the coming years. By analyzing changes in global tonnage, recent historical data from the Baltic Dry Index, and pressures created by recent environmental regulations, this paper will use strategic-analytical tools (such as SWOT, Porter’s 5 Forces, PESTLE) in order to make strategic recommendations for bulk ship owners. Based on the findings, managers should expect an unusually positive iteration of the 4-year “boom-bust cycle” and should take this opportunity to prioritize modernizing their fleet while discarding less energy efficient vessels. However, managers should exercise caution and likely avoid purchasing novel green-technology modifications for their ships in the short term.
