Based on the construction of the Chinese International Relations theory (CIRT) by Qin Yaqing, a mainland Chinese IR theorist trained in the U.S., this paper analyses how Qin’s Chinese IR knowledge has shed new light on both of the Chinese International Relations and the studies of International Relations (IR) in terms of the perspective of Sinicization. Sinicization, as Peter Katzenstein defined it, means the civilizational processes and exchanges between and beyond the West and the East in which China and the world try to accommodate each other. Therefore, Sinicization could be how China negotiates how it relates to the world and vice versa. In such a theoretical framework, the evolution of CIRT involves the civilizational encounters, choices, and strategies in which multiple relationality and agencies relate, respond, and emerge. This dissertation finds and argues that only by taking a civilizational, processual, and on-their-own-terms approach on the CIRT can the reproduction and reimagination of it being revealed and studied. The CIRT thus connects and contributes to the studies of IR, International Political Thoughts, and China studies by stimulating new relevant agendas among them.
