Dajia Jenn Lann Temple is one of the representative cases of local caesaropapism in contemporary Taiwan. Throughout the interaction between Dajia local society, organizations and the temple from Japanese ruling era to the beginning of R.O.C. era, this article is willing to discover how Jenn Lann Temple had become the cohesion of local peoples in the modernizing process. Dajia alluvial plain has been surrounded by natural barriers such as brooks on the northern and southern sides, a strait on the western side, and mountains on the eastern side. Besides, in the early days of Qing ruling era, indigenous peoples had been massacred by Qing’s army, and afterwards Han immigrants entered Dajia, reclaiming through such military colonization. As a result, the local society of Dajia had been highly isolated, and Jenn Lann Temple as the center of local belief had been deeply associated with local organizations, especially military organizations. In the process of regime changing, Japanese colonial government had suppressed local armies, impacting the connection between Jenn Lann Temple and local traditional organizations. Meanwhile, local modernization promoted by the colonial government had transformed daily life by means of the introduction of new technology. On the other hand, the gentle merchants had been risen in this progress, obtaining the substantial leadership of local society. The gentle merchants deported ex-abbot of Jenn Lann Temple in 1924, acquiring the management. Henceforth, the new generation of gentle merchants, who were mostly born in 1890s, succeeded the power, operating Jenn Lann Temple as a public sphere in which they encouraged cultural and political movements. However, those movements had been declined along with the end of the social movements in Taiwan in the early 1930s. In the late 1920s, Dajia had confronted commercial crises. To resolve such predicament, the local traditional organizations had amplified the religious activity, the pilgrimage to Beigang Chaotian Temple, and cohered with new commercial groups, constructing a tremendous festival. Through the abundant shows when the god returned to Dajia, numerous organizations of the street could maintain visible and invisible benefits. Therefore, peoples in Dajia had been unified, and in that process, place identity had been gradually established under Jenn Lann Temple, which had become the core of local society. Dajia would suffered the war since 1937 to 1945, the February 28 incident in 1947, and the white terror afterwards. The local society had lost political autonomy, while Jenn Lann Temple remained other social functions, enhancing its influence as the pilgrimage being kept enlarging, till nowadays. |
