Abstract According to “Report on the Living Conditions and Needs of Persons with Disabilities in 2016” by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, as of the end of June 2016, there were 57,118 people with visual impairment in Taiwan, and 36.43% of the visually impaired people had difficulty in taking medication. Medication safety for visually impaired people needs urgent attention. This qualitative study explores the experience, feelings and expectations regarding medication for the visually impaired. Data is collected through focus groups and semi-structured interviews. The study finds that the medication use of visually impaired person full of challenges, including pill identification, correct medication, medication management and storage, and access to medication information. The difficulty is not merely a result of their own visual impairment. Instead, it is also the consequence of the 'disability-causing' medication environment causing by the lack of legible drug information and insensitivity of medical personnel to the needs of visual impairment. The accessibility of medical are resources is low. To improve these problems in addition to the policy of promoting readable medication information, pharmaceutical groups should cooperate with visually impaired groups to assess their needs and formulate relevant barrier-free pharmaceutical care guidelines. In so doing, we can improve consultation and communication skills, and provide personalized pharmaceutical care to facilitate the independence of medication for visually impaired persons. Through multi-party cooperation, the equality of pharmaceutical care resources can be improved, and build a safer medication environment for all. |
