Function Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) was used to obtain the hemodynamic brain responses during perspective modulated naturalistic movie presentations to find the influence of perception to individual’s cognitive (perspective-taking) and affective (empathy) reactions. Inter-subject correlation (ISC) was used as the analysis tool. A post-movie survey and Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) was used as the behavioral measurement tool. To distinguish the neural substrates related to perspective-taking and empathy, selected group ISC analysis and Mantel test were applied on the hemodynamic data and behavioral data. Two analysis deprive a common pattern of regions of interest around parietal-temporal-occipital area, which suggest the perception of movie imposed a stronger perspective taking with a third person’s perspective and imposed a stronger empathy with a first person’s perspective. The finding helps understanding the neural mechanism of perspective taking and would be a useful for future social cognition studies.
