| zh_TW |
dc.description.abstract | In Taiwan, English-learning magazines have been important materials for English teaching and learning, and all of the magazines include English-into-Chinese translation. Most senior high and vocational high schools in Taiwan list English-learning magazines as essential supplementary English teaching and learning materials. English-learning magazines also fulfill the requirements in Ministry of Education’s (MOE) curriculum guideline for senior high and vocational high schools. In addition, MOE lists translation as a part of the core abilities senior high and vocational high school students should acquire by graduation. Thus, English-learning magazines play a vital role in English teaching and learning in Taiwan. However, currently in academia, the few studies that focus on English-learning magazines do not thoroughly discuss issues about translation in English-learning magazines. Hence, this study aims to fill the research gap.
This study is divided into three parts. First, in the text analysis, the study examines the translation strategies of two reading-based general English learning magazines commonly used by senior and vocational high schools in Taiwan: Live Interactive English Magazine and Studio Classroom. The text analysis is categorized into three sections: intra-sentence translation strategies, inter-sentence translation strategies, and translation notes. Second, editors from the two magazines were interviewed to examine translation purposes. The editors also offered suggestions for utilizing translation in English-learning magazines. Third, four vocational high school English teachers were interviewed to further examine the effectiveness of translation in English-learning magazines. Teacher interviews aim to investigate the role of English-learning magazines in English teaching and learning, the translation functions and purposes of English-learning magazines, suggestions about the uses of translation in English-learning magazines for students, and feedback on translation strategies in English-learning magazines. This study adopted Vermeer’s skopos theory as the theoretical framework. This study also compared text analysis, editors’ perspectives and teachers’ perspectives in order to comprehensively discuss the three sources of data. The results demonstrate that both English magazines frequently utilized most intra-sentence translation strategies to produce accurate and fluent translation; in order to produce sentence alignment, inter-sentence translation strategies are hardly used; some translation notes are applied to illustrate cultural background information or language use. All the aforementioned translation strategies correspond to the translation purposes perceived by both editors and all teachers. Teachers also generally acknowledge the effectiveness of these strategies. Based on the research findings, this study offers suggestions for translating English-learning magazines and provides English teachers and learners with advice on the uses of translation in English-learning magazines. | en |
