A head-mounted display (HMD) using stereoscopic images to create 3D sens¬ation may cause users to feel nauseous after using it for a while. The visual discomfort results from the inconsistency between the eye vergence and the eye accommodation. In this paper, we propose a novel light field display to alleviate the vergence-accommodation conflict existing in most stereoscopy-based HMD. The key to our near-eye display is an eyepiece that creates a condensed reproduction of the light field for display. This is achieved by minimizing the aberrations of on-axial and off-axial light rays and maximizing the field of view of the display. In addition, we use a human eye model to verify if the displayed light field leads to the desired depth perception. It involves observing the change of images on the retinal plane of the eye model as the eye focuses at different distances. The result matches human 3D perception and shows that the condensed light field contains sufficient details.
