With the recent growing popularity of interactive touch surfaces, tabletops are becoming widely spread in different fields of our everyday lives. Concepts of touch introduced a totally new way of interaction to society, where people can interact with technologies in a more intuitive and direct way. With this recent trend of using larger displays with higher resolution, and manipulate the content by direct touch, the question of price also gained importance. One of previous works developed a cost-effective solution, the two resolution projector-based tabletop, i-m-Top. It resolves the commercial issue and provides an even bigger area for research.
The two resolutions display provides a new way of interaction on tabletops, especially in the area of scaling objects. After surveying a few research works and papers we discovered many available magnifying techniques for touch based interfaces, especially for LCD displays. However, no research has been found that surveyed the implementation of scaling on multiresolution displays.
This paper introduces imGlass, the technique which supports four different scaling modes, including a 1 one-resolution based mode and 3 two-resolution modes, which support different kinds of multiscale user interaction on the interactive tabletop surface. Unlike traditional pan-zoom interfaces, imGlass provides up to three levels of zooming techniques. The aim of this master thesis is to show that the two resolutions can provide a more efficient interaction than an interaction on one resolution displays. We evaluated our techniques by holding a User Study, in the context of both object locating and scaling. Results have indicated that the two resolutions modes provide a 1.3 times faster interaction than a one resolution mode in both objective and subjective measurements
