In recent years, medical technology has advanced quickly and with it, the human's average lifespan has increased. Therefore, the health of the elderly has become a very important concern for many countries. The most common way to evaluate elderly health is usually the physical fitness method, which involves observing muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, balance, coordination, reaction time, and body composition. In traditional physical fitness tests for the elderly, artificial visual method are used to calculate the subject's number of complete action and angles of joints during the test. This not only requires human resources, but may also easily lead to errors.
Therefore, this research integrates wireless sensing technologies with physical fitness testing for the elderly. The proposed system judges the motion status during the test, depending on the algorithm, and then calculates the number of complete actions and the joint angles, and the examined result will be sent to the on-line database.
The proposed system is designed to examine the eight-index of physical fitness mentioned above. The system receives the motion signals from the portable accelerometer sensors and the Wii Balance Board that connect subject's four limbs. A wearable wireless-based device is also designed for the subjects so that their movements are not easily affected during the test. The developed system is useful for the elderly to self-test and self-train.
