The frontiers in Naito Konan’s doctrine of civilization and culture: The case of Taiwan and Korea
It is a very difficult task to define modern times in Japan. To the knowledge leaders in Japan at the time, the modern times seemed like a long journey for the beast to pass through. Therefore, how to deal with the powerful Western civilization that has been seriously attacked the East Asia was a necessary lesson for all knowledge leaders to learn during that period. To scholar Naito Konan who was born in the early modern time, the modern time refers to a significant process to position Japan and Western countries. With the association of this meaning, Naito Konan’s cultural theory can be explained as: a documentary about the country looking over the light from the end of the beast path and stepping on countless mountains and rivers before traversing the beast path.
According to Naito Konan’s prior studies, the writings about Taiwan and Korean discourse are often simplified as: the relationship between the colonials and the colony. As a result, it seems as if a gap exists between Taiwan and Korean discourse and Naito’s cultural theory. This study will further investigate Naito Konan’s cultural theory and attempt to combine it with Taiwan and Korean discourse.
