| Abstract: | None Recent studies have examined the effect of China’s aid on economic and social outcomes in recipient countries. However, the impact of these commitments on the environment has garnered little attention in the literature. This paper provides the first evidence on the correlation between China’s aid and carbon emissions in recipient countries. Using data on China’s aid to 121 countries from 2000 to 2014 with country-level indicators from the World Bank, we find that China’s aid is associated with carbon emission increases. Specifically, this relationship is dependent on the GDP of the recipient country. These positive effects are also observed when considering China’s economic and production aid and recipient countries with better government. Suggestive evidence indicates that these associations depend on the composition and intent of these commitments to recipient countries. |
