Since 2000, LGBTQ equal rights movements in Taiwan have been in full swing. However, the referendum against marriage equality instigated by the anti-LGBTQ camp in 2018 clearly shows the predicament of the “gentle strategy” based on realistic, reticent, and middle-class values that is employed by the mainstream equal rights movements, and in the post-referendum period the problem of the complicated relation between gender/sexuality and nation has become even more prominent. In order to interrogate these problems that keep emerging, contemporary queer activists have strategically invoked and appropriated digital media resources to incorporate equal rights movements and other social issues into their own creative works, revealing a contemporary Taiwanese critical queer aesthetic. In light of this, this study proposes the concept of “queer absurdity,” and by analyzing contemporary LGBTQ aesthetic methods, this study explains how a new generation of queer creators manipulate the “absurd” in their works to transform, endure and resist the normativity operative in Taiwan. These works not only portray contemporary LGBTQ structures of feeling, they also try to expand perspectives and through the issue of gender/sexuality further interrogate the (dis)identificatory process of “Taiwan”. Specifically, the new generation of queer creations, not entirely same with the radical queer theoretical practices from the 90s onwards, use “feeling of absurdity” as an alternative radical aesthetic to reflect the ridiculous scenarios the new generation of queer youths have to face, such as homophobia, discrimination and homonormativity, in order to expand the living space for Taiwanese LGBTQ youths and establish queer alliances for the future. Through three different types of source material, namely literature, memes and image macros, and digital performances, this study explains and dissects the theoretical concept of “queer absurdity” and its political tensions, to point out that this concept offers a possible way out of the predicament the contemporary LGBTQ community is in. |
