This thesis collects and analyzes research on King Huiwen of Qin’s jade prayer tablets. The first chapter serves as an introduction to the artifact and the thesis. The second and third chapters collect and analyze other scholars’ commentaries on the text. The fourth chapter offers a more detailed discussion of the identity of Yin of Qin (秦駰), the meaning of “the time of the Zhou Dynasty has already ended” (周世既沒), the identity of Jing (陘), and the meaning of the “royal house” (王室) as found on both the tablet and in Qin bamboo strips. I argue that Jing is a lesser spirit used by King Huiwen to communicate with the spirit of Mt. Hua, and that the meaning of “royal house” is similar to the usage of the term found in Qin bamboo strips. The fifth chapter discusses the tablet in the context of mountain worship, and argues that King Huiwen of Qin is trying to assimilate the spirit of the recently conquered Mt. Hua into Qin state religion, and that the tablet thus provides important information about one way in which state sacrifices were established. This chapter also discusses the other ritual reforms implemented by King Huiwen. The sixth chapter is a conclusion.
