This thesis analyzes fandom and celebrityhood in Don DeLillo’s Great Jones Street, White Noise, and Mao II from the perspective of Baudrillard’s object theory. Cultural studies scholarship on fandom is drawn upon to further support this reading. I argue that celebrities are inherently empty signs for which fandom aims to produce meaning. However, extreme fandom, as practiced by some of DeLillo’s characters, reverses the relationship between the fan subject and the fan object, so that the fan subject recognizes the void behind superficial celebrity images and realizes it is impossible to exercise sovereignty over the fan object. Chapter One looks at the commodification and consumption of art, culture, and history in the three novels. Chapter Two discusses DeLillo’s characterization of fans as both pathological deviants and resistive anti-consumers. Chapter Three argues that fandom is an attempt to escape from the Baudrillardian seduction. Chapter Four examines celebrity and fandom from the perspective of Baudrillard’s Fatal Strategies to show that when taken over its zenith, fans’ and celebrities’ pursuit of subjectivity brings destruction upon itself and frees the subject from bourgeois/capitalist fetters. |
