摘要: | Abstract
'Before Silicon Valley became the promised land of high tech, half way across the world, one man was leading a revolution.' - Discovery Channel 'Stan Shih made a huge difference in the history of the personal computer. He put Taiwan on the map. He made it the place where a high percentage of the innovation and great work is done” - Bill Gates The story of Acer is the story of Taiwan. Started out as a contract manufacturer, it transformed itself to become one of the leading computer brands in the world. Its latest acquisition of the ailing Gateway is another attempt at boosting its recognition in the intensely competitive American market. This transnational merger is one of the few instances that a Taiwanese company attempting to absorb an American counterpart into its operation. In this paper, I hope to show that beyond the financial considerations which were in play, the management expertise required in executing the complex cross-border integration process warranted a new leadership approach. My research was conducted mainly through literature reviews, articles written by both Academics and Journalists during the acquisition phase of the deal and most important of all, important points taken at Stan Shih’s talk at National Taiwan University. In addition attendance of Acer’s annual shareholder meeting in person and individual observations were included to deduce differing objective perspectives. Key Words Mergers and Acquisitions, Cross-Cultural Management, Leadership |
