The present study investigated the early development YAO in Mandarin-speaking children. YAO is a high frequency term in Mandarin. It has been undergoing the process of grammaticalization and identified with more than one communicative function. This study aims to examine the functions of YAO in children’s speech and the grammatical patterns used in expressing different functions of YAO. Data examined in this study was spontaneous speech from three children aged from 1;5 to 3;5. Three main analyses were conducted in this study. The first analysis examined children’s use of YAO in terms of the communicative functions. The result showed that three functions of YAO were acquired in the following order: (1) to express request or volition, (2) to denote obligation or necessity, and (3) to make inference of an event. The emerging order of the different functions was closely related to children’s socio-cognitive development. The second analysis was conducted to investigate the grammatical patterns used with different functions of YAO. It was found that the first-acquired function was expressed in the widest range of grammatical patterns, whereas the other two functions were expressed mostly in the pattern ‘YAO+VP’ or ‘NPAgent+YAO+VP’. Furthermore, the children seemed to go through an ‘old form and new function mapping’ process in expanding the use of YAO from one function to another. The third analysis concerned the use of YAO in adults’ speech. It has been shown that the use of YAO in the input provided scaffolding for children. A large part of YAO was used to make confirmation of the children’s request or volitional actions. Also, the adult showed adaptation in the use of YAO to express the function of denoting obligation or necessity. Overall, the form and function mapping process seems to drive the course of development of multifunctional YAO and adult input also plays a role. |
