Audio and Video Coding Standard - Part 2 (AVS-P2) is a video coding standard developed by the AVS Workgroup of China. It is a recently established standard suitable in applications such as high definition digital video broadcasting and high density storage media. In this thesis, coding algorithms and hardware architecture of AVS encoder are proposed for a multi-standard video coding system. Since the AVS encoder is constructed on an existing MPEG-4 Advance Simple Profile (ASP) encoder, the main design methodology is to minimize the additional cost constructed on the basic layer MPEG-4 encoder so that the overall system can be implemented with low cost. Several techniques have been adopted in the system such as efficient pipelining scheme, reconfigurable design, hardware-friendly prediction methods, and maximum reuse of (Arithmetic Logic Units) ALUs and local memory buffer. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme provides a simple and low cost implementation of AVS encoder in a multi-standard video coding system. |
