Despite being one of the best-selling Chinese historian, Ray Huang’s China image was widely discredited among the U.S. and Chinese academia. Whilst his central academic concern remained constant, his discoursive mode had changed throughout his career as an historian. He started his career adjusting himself to the style of academic papers in the States, then introducing China in western academic language with his own fashion. In later part of his career, he compared the China and the west under the standard of Chinese historical experience. Ray Huang’s work had eminently shown a different way of interpreting China at the incipient phase of his career. The main reason for this is his experience as a KMT military officer in China inland and the cultural shock he had encountered when he first arrived at the United States of America. For the reasons above, and his life experience in China before he reached adulthood, KMT backgound and choice for staying in the U.S., the assorted reason mention above could be one of the most important motif for him to craft a different theory on China that can answer all his question on his own identity. However, Huang’s China image was not approved by the academic standard of social sciences. Furthermore, his viewpoint had challenged the existing theory system of the mainstream academia. His career in the States was not smooth throughout and finally lost his tenure. In the great despair, he turned to full-time writing and never looked back. |
