E-books have flourished for many years. Compared to adult e-books, it seems that children e-books are more popular among readers in the library. However, there are few studies focusing on children’s reading behaviors of e-books which provided by public libraries. Purposes of this study are: 1. to investigate children’s reading behaviors of e-books; 2. to explore the impact of the characteristics of e-books on children’s reading behaviors; 3. to find out the factors which influence children’s usage of e-books.
Semi-structured in-depth interview was conducted in this study. Research targets are nine children who have experiences in reading e-books. Themes of the interview are: children’s reading behaviors of e-books, the impact of the characteristics of children e-book on reading behaviors, the factors which influence reading children e-books, and children’s viewpoints of e-book services provided by Taipei Public Library.
Findings of this study are as follows: 1. Children’s major motivations of reading e-books are interesting contents and parents’ requests. Children like to read e-books which are fun and amusing. Children perceive that there are differences among e-books, cartoons, and web pages. They praise the sound and automatic play mode of e-books. But, they dislike that e-books are not portable and unable to make notes. Children prefer to read e-books than printed books and they read e-books for amusement. However, they spend more time in reading printed books than e-books. Children play the games which contained in e-books, but they do not join discussion forum and other interactive designs. Children prefer automatic play mode to manual play mode. 2. Most children indicate that they are satisfied with e-book services provided by Taipei Public library. Slow internet connection speed, complicated authentication process, and inappropriate contents are factors which affect their use of the Library’s e-book collections. 3. The characteristics of e-books have enhanced children’s reading motivation and have evoked their positive attitudes towards reading. E-books relieve the constraints of time and space in reading. It is found that children are accustomed to read from the screen. Children may be confused in reading e-books if there are internet connection and operation problems. Generally speaking, children rely on sound than text when they use e-books. 4. The factors which influence reading e-books are parents, libraries, internet connection, software requirements, book copyright, and e-book contents.
Suggestions are submitted to parents, teachers, libraries and e-book publishers. Further studies may focus on the following topics. 1. To observe children’s reading behaviors of e-books under real situation. 2. To conduct content analysis of children e-books. 3. To investigate children’s reading behavior of e-books of different types. 4. To compare reading behaviors of children of different grade levels or children in different geographical areas.
