Since the 21st century, the film and television links between Taiwan and Mainland China have been developing rapidly. This link has been regarded as the 'industrial partnership under the tide of globalization'. Driven by the integration of industry, a large number of Taiwanese talents have migrated to Mainland China. However, a lot of independent documentary workers of Mainland China have bucked the trend, making frequent appearances in Taiwan since 2013, with great influence.
This study deploys semi-structured interview as the research method, interviewed 13 Taiwanese documentary directors, scholars, as well as workers from the international documentary film festival (TIDF), Taiwan Public Television Service, CNEX and Taipei Documentary Filmmakers' Union. This study attempts to outline the status quo of the connection of independent documentary workers from Taiwan and mainland China from 2013 to 2018, and analysis the reasons for promoting this connection.
This thesis finds that the interaction between independent documentaries on both sides of the straits entered the 'period of strategic support' after 2013. Taiwan connects with mainland independent documentaries through multiple nodes and forms corresponding mechanism; this link is influenced by political-economic situation, as well as professional cognition, rather than driven by industrial factors alone.
This thesis partly fills the gap in the field of overseas communication of mainland independent documentaries; updates the theoretical perspective of the current cross-strait film and television relations study, which only emphasizes industrial factors; puts forward practical suggestions for future cross-strait cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Mainland China.
