Both Lai Ho (賴和) and Yang Shou-yu (楊守愚) are born and live in Changhua during the era of Japanese colonial period. They are have a close relationship in daily life, and also in literary and social movement. These two writers wrote fictions in Taiwanese in 1930s, when there was a debate of “nativist literature” in Taiwan literati. For example, Huang Shi-hui (黃石輝) wrote the essay “Why not promote Taiwan nativist literature”, and Lee Shying-chuang (李献璋) published “The Collected Folklore of Taiwan”. Lai Ho and Yang Shou-yu also participated in the movement of nativist literature and wrote novels based on landscape of Chang-hua in the background. This thesis centers in the landscapes depicted in Changhua in Lai ho and Yang shou-yu’s novels. This thesis attempts to analyze Lai and Yang’s novels in terms of the landscapes, and uses the theory of “Imagined Communities” by Benedict Anderson. This thesis would like to argue that Lai Ho and Yang Shou-yu tried to embody the landscape of Changhua in novels in order to make readers familiar with the novel and writer. Furthermore, via novel writing, Lai and Yang tried to create an “imagined community” of Changhua natives and the Taiwanese. After comparing their landscape depictions in novels, this thesis would also contend that while Lai and Yang employs many similar landscapes in their novels, they focus on different aspects of Changhua landscapes. |
