I investigate the impact of foreign directors in banks on the loan terms of borrowers from the same country as the foreign director. The empirical results suggest that if there is at least one foreign director whose nationality is the same as the borrower nationality, the loan maturity will be longer, and the necessity of security will be eliminated. If the cultural distance between lending bank and borrowing firm is large, foreign directors can lower the loan spread, amount, and maturity, and make loans more likely secured. If the borrower is a small company, foreign directors can increase the probability of loans being secured. If the corporate governance of the bank is poor, foreign directors can decrease the probability of loans being secured. |
