This paper focuses on the missionary practices of the Chinese Home Missionary Society (CHMS) in Yunnan between 1918 and 1940, examining how Chinese Christians pursued missionary actions that combined indigenous agency with an ecumenical perspective amidst the rise of nationalism and the waning influence of Western mission boards. Utilizing the Society’s internal publication The Gospel Bell (福音鐘)as its primary source, and integrating the developmental contexts of global Christianity and indigenous Chinese Christianity, this study systematically analyzes Cheng Jingyi’s religious thought and its reflection in the CHMS's mission in Yunnan. This article argues that Cheng advocated for establishing a Chinese-led missionary organization within the boundaries of the nation-state and demonstrated through Chinese cultural compatibility discourse that indigenization does not conflict with the universal nature of Christianity. Operating within this framework, the CHMS launched frontier missions in Yunnan to fulfill the mission of saving the country through the Gospel while supplementing the resource shortages of Western mission boards in border regions. The findings reveal that the success of the CHMS was not solely driven by nationalism; rather, because the CHMS drew on Western missionary experience, achieved financial self-support through domestic and overseas donations alongside medical and educational service revenues, and actively cultivated local talent, it therefore demonstrated resilience and organizational mobilization in the face of political turmoil and wartime economic contraction, enabling the sustained execution of its frontier missionary tasks. |
