Talk shows constitute a distinctive form of semi-institutional discourse characterized by highly interactive and entertainment-oriented communication. Hosts frequently employ impoliteness, such as teasing to threaten guests’ face, while guests must respond immediately and manage both face and entertainment demands. Although previous studies have examined impoliteness and humor in talk shows, recipients’ responses remain comparatively underexplored. This study investigates impoliteness responses in the Taiwanese talk show《賀瓏夜夜秀》using interview episodes from its YouTube channel. Interactional sequences are analyzed through Conversation Analysis (CA). while analysis combines Tholander and Aronsson’s (2002) teasing response strategies with Limberg’s (2009) framework of compliance and non-compliance. The findings show that guests generally maintain participation in the host’s humorous frame through playing along, regardless of whether they comply with or resist the host’s interactional direction. Rather than functioning as a discrete response strategy, playing along operates as an overarching interactional orientation realized through strategies such as denials, accounts, minimal responses, retaliation, and proactive work. The study further demonstrates that compliance does not necessarily imply agreement with the host’s evaluation; guests may resist the host’s stance while continuing to sustain the interaction. Consequently, humour in Taiwanese talk show discourse emerges from the collaborative interaction among hosts, guests, and audiences, and impoliteness functions as an institutional and performative interactional resource rather than merely a form of verbal aggression.
