The 2020 novel《臺灣漫遊錄》, by Taiwanese writer Yang Shuang-zi (楊双子), presents as a new Mandarin translation of a twentieth-century Japanese travelogue by Aoyama Chizuko, who travelled around Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. After publication, the book was revealed to be an original novel by Yang, making the text a pseudotranslation—a supposed translation for which no source text actually exists. This thesis adopts a an interdisciplinary approach that draws on theories of postcolonial translation and travel writing to examine how Yang Shuang-zi uses pseudotranslation to reimagine and reframe Taiwan’s colonial history. This thesis uses a paratextual analysis to explore how Yang unsettles dominant historical narratives and reconstructs colonial experience through multiple, intersecting female perspectives. Further examination of the 2024 English translation, Taiwan Travelogue, translated by Lin King (金翎) explores how the translator mediates cultural and historical elements for an Anglophone audience. King employs extensive foreignization strategies that preserve cultural specificity and foreground the translator’s role. By examining the original Mandarin novel and its English translation, this thesis looks at how translation in postcolonial contexts can both reinforce and resist asymmetrical power relations present in colonial and postcolonial societies. It also seeks to contribute to scholarship on Taiwanese literature and provide insight into how translations of these works are circulated and accepted abroad. |
