This study investigates the correspondence between the Japanese sentence-final particle ‘yo’ and the Taiwanese Mandarin modal particle ‘o’ through quantitative and qualitative analyses of Japanese and Taiwanese Mandarin textbooks.
The quantitative analysis shows that in Japanese textbooks, ‘o’ appears most frequently as the modal particle corresponding to ‘yo’, indicating a high degree of correspondence between the two. Furthermore, an analysis of cases classified as having “no correspondence” reveals that in most instances, ‘o’ can be contextually supplemented. This further supports the strong correspondence between ‘yo’ and ‘o’.
The qualitative analysis, based on Kamio’s (2002) Theory of Territory of Information, indicates that ‘o’ is selected in contexts when the listener’s information state is extremely low. In contrast, when the listener’s information state is uncertain or not extremely low, other modal particles besides ‘o’ tend to be selected.
The analysis of Taiwanese Mandarin textbooks confirms that ‘yo’ appears most frequently as the sentence-final particle corresponding to ‘o’, thereby demonstrating a bidirectional correspondence between the two forms. In cases where ‘ne’ appears as a corresponding form, the context involves shared information between the speaker and the listener, with empathetic and agreement-related functions being foregrounded. This suggests that while ‘o’ strongly corresponds to ‘yo’, it partially overlaps with ‘ne’ depending on the certain context.
Finally, a supplementary analysis of the correspondence between ‘ne’ and ‘o’ suggests that information structure and politeness strategies independently influence sentence-final particle selection. In particular, the cases in which ‘ne’ is selected even in contexts where ‘yo’ would be expected indicate the priority of politeness strategies in actual discourse. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating not only information structure but also sociopragmatic perspectives in the study of sentence-final/modal particles.
