Modern society is fast-paced and high-pressured, and the mental health problems people encounter gradually increase year after year. Fu et al. (2013) found that the prevalence of common mental disorders (CMD) in Taiwan between 1990 and 2010 had increased significantly, indicating that the mental health of Taiwanese has a downward trend over time. In addition, previous studies have shown that the quantity of interpersonal interaction among people is also decreasing year by year. The current study focuses on unpacking the relationship between mental health and social change, in which investigating the role of interpersonal interaction. We expect the decline in the quantity of interpersonal interaction will also lead to a decline in mental health. Furthermore, to explore whether the interaction between quantity and quality of interpersonal interaction has a buffering effect on mental health decline. The current study analyzed 14,290 subjects collected in the Taiwan Social Change Survey from 1990 to 2020, on the quantity and quality of interpersonal interaction and the score of common mental disorders. The results showed that the decline in the quantity of interpersonal interaction would lead to a decline in mental health as the years go by. Moreover, the quality of interpersonal interaction can buffer the negative effect of the quantity of interpersonal interaction on the decline in mental health. |
