摘要: | Eocronartium muscicola (Pers.) Fitzp. (Eocronartiaceae, Platygloeales, Pucciniomycotina) is a moss parasitic fungus that can be found in the temperate zone. Its host, mosses, are non-vascular plants, that are sometimes utilized as roof greening plants and/or used as model plants in plant science research. Eocronartium has been known to be a monotypic genus including only E. muscicola with over 15 synonyms. However, the morphology of fruiting bodies is diverse, and the host range of this fungus is wide. Owing to that reason, the interpretation of the previous taxonomical assignment of “E. muscicola (E. muscicola-like fungi)” is ambiguous, and may require a molecular phylogenetic approach. The objective of this study was to clarify the taxonomic treatment of “E. muscicola” based on molecular phylogenetic analyses, morphological observations and biological study of host mosses. One hundred-fifty fruiting bodies of E. muscicola were examined for morphological analysis, and 121 sequences of these fruiting body specimens and living culture specimens were utilized for molecular phylogenetic studies. Fruiting bodies on various mosses were collected from mainly Japan and Taiwan. In addition, the authentic specimens of E. muscicola examined by Fitzpatrick were used in this study to identify the most reliable E. muscicola (Pers.) Fitzp. Results of the molecular phylogenetic analyses reveal that the fungal specimens which were morphologically identified as “E. muscicola” consisted of four genetically different groups (Em1, Em2, Em3 and Em4). These phylogenetic groupscorrelated with morphological features of fungal fruiting bodies and the classification and/or sexuality of host mosses. As a result, Em1 was recognized to be E. muscicola (Pers.) Fitzp., whereas the other three groups were regarded as different species from E. muscicola (Pers.) Fitzp. based on phylogenetic studies, morphological studies, and the biological characteristics of their host mosses. Consequently, these three groups were concluded to be new species of the genus Eocronartium. |
