The rising political forces in Hong Kong since the Umbrella movement in 2014 have been disqualified. At the same time, the controversy over 'one country, two systems' last; by 2018, the leaders of the democratic movement were sentenced and put in jail. The movement has almost lost its momentum. Until 2019, the Anti-extradition movement became a turning point for the Hong Kong democracy movement. Not only the number of protesters was greater than ever, people in Hong Kong also invented new forms of manifestation. Factions of the pro-democratic camp have came to share a common ground for the first time in the history. The author visited Hong Kong's large-scale democratic movements, parliamentary elections, and special heads elections to witness Hong Kong people’s pursuit of democracy. There is no timeline for the double suffrage so far. But the campaign is the efforts of generations of people at different positions. This in depth reporting explores many different positions and opinions in the Hong Kong political spectrum, together with the varied levels of powers in the civil society. The historical development of the Hong Kong democracy movement is unfolded through the life journeys of five campaign participants. |
