With the rapid change of information technology, the face of diverse and growing electronic resources, how to access and manage the necessary academic information, has become a common problem faced by users and libraries. Google released in beta in November 2004, the Google Scholar index includes peer-reviewed journals, thesis, scholarly books, and other scholarly publishers. Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. Helping users find relevant work across the world of scholarly research. Many libraries have implemented federated search systems to offer integrated services for users. But, the proportion of library budgets for electronic resources is increasing in recent years. In contrast, Google Scholar to use its powerful search engines to crawl academic resources, academic resources to provide a single portal search tools free, simple and fast search mode, will attract many users. Therefore, this study is to investigate the perceptions, acceptance and usage behavior users on Google Scholar.
This study takes Google Scholar as a target system and the faculty and students of NTNU as objects to collect 465 effective questionnaires by online survey. SPSS 12.0 and Amos 20.0 are used to analyze the questionnaire responses. Adding the external variables of satisfaction and loyalty to Fred Davis' technology acceptance model (TAM). This study examined the extent to which students perceived Google Scholar to be a resource that is useful and easy to use. The results show that Google Scholar are helpful to get the needed resources for users. Users recognize the functions of systems and most of them will recommend it to others. This research showed that TAM is an applicable model for predicting student use of Google Scholar, which can help academic librarians seeking to understand student acceptance of new information sources. It is proved that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, system quality, comprehensiveness, subjective norm, satisfaction, and loyalty affect the perceptions, acceptance and usage behavior of Google Scholar indeed.
Finally, this study suggests the results of analysis can be offered to NTNU Library for reference service and library Instruction to enhance. Besides, it also recommends to proceed an integrated study about usage behavior of other federated search systems to explore the differences between usage behavior and acceptance of different systems.
