摘要: 咖啡是世界上交易最多的商品之一,一些最大的生咖啡豆出口国位于中美洲和南美洲:例如巴西,哥伦比亚和危地马拉。
Coffee is one of the most traded commodities in the world and some of the biggest exporters of green coffee beans are located in Central and South America: such as Brazil, Colombia and Guatemala. While coffee has captivated consumers around the world and is expected to keep a steady growth by being one of the most popular drinks among younger generations, there is a big impact the industry can achieve as a whole by implementing small changes that contribute to the preservation of the environment. Latin America is one of the few regions where sustainability is taking longer to be implemented into most supply chains. Every day, thousands of coffee blends from local and international roasters are bought, but most of those bags end up in landfills and contribute to global pollution causing damage to the natural resources.
Nowadays, a more conscious-driven demand is pushing roasters and exporters to reconsider the traditional PET packages and seek more environmentally-friendly options such as biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable bags. According to World Bank Data, the average for the region in recent years in terms of waste management and recycling percentage has been among one of the lowest (3-6%). Therefore, introducing innovative products can decrease the amount of unprocessed waste and create a new dynamic in the consumption patterns of coffee and other dried foods.
The following study focuses on alternative products for the traditional coffee model and analyzes how to introduce them to the coffee industry in Latin America.
