This study aims to analyze the trend of LGBTQ academic research in Taiwan and Japan, as well as the relationship between academic trends and the social environment. While the protection of LGBTQ rights in both Taiwan and Japan reflects their growing attention to LGBTQ issues, previous studies on LGBTQ academic trends have largely focused on Europe and North America and have predominantly relied on international bibliographic databases. To address this gap, this research employs bibliometric analysis, STEP analysis, and comparative analysis to examine journal articles and academic theses. The study investigates literature growth trends, academic discipline distribution, research productivity, characteristics of themes topics, and dissemination channels. Additionally, it incorporates news data to construct the social context and assess its correlation with research trends.
The data covers both domestic and international academic publications from Taiwan and Japan, with a total of 8,030 records analyzed. The results indicate that while Taiwan has fewer LGBTQ-related journal publications than Japan, it significantly surpasses Japan in the number of academic theses. In terms of trends, both countries show a phase of rapid growth in LGBTQ academic publications. LGBTQ research in both Taiwan and Japan is predominantly situated within the humanities and social sciences, with "society" and "culture" being the primary themes. Nearly 80% of the authors have contributed to only one LGBTQ-related journal article, and the distribution of journals reveals the emergence of clearly defined core journals. On the other hand, LGBTQ-related academic theses in Taiwan are mainly concentrated in departments related to gender and sexuality, whereas in Japan, the distribution is more scattered.
Finally, the STEP analysis reveals that the differences in LGBTQ academic publication patterns and characteristics between Taiwan and Japan stem from their distinct social and academic environments. Further examination using Pearson correlation coefficients indicates a strong correlation between Japan’s LGBTQ academic trends and the societal context constructed from news data. In contrast, Taiwan’s academic development appears relatively independent, with a time lag of over 20 years compared to its news coverage. This study concludes that LGBTQ research remains an emerging field in Taiwan and Japan. Going forward, it is essential to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and explore a wider range of topics. Scholars across various disciplines should be encouraged to engage in sustained research to enhance the quality and international visibility of LGBTQ studies.
