This thesis examines how Satō Haruo’s Taiwan works depict the three groups of “naichijin” (Japanese mainlanders), “hontōjin” (Taiwanese Islanders), and “banjin” (Taiwanese indigenous peoples), and how their identities are represented and negotiated within these texts. In 1920, Satō traveled to Taiwan and Fujian, experiences that inspired a series of travel essays and novels. His Taiwan works stand out as a pioneering attempt by a Japanese writer to observe colonial society from the perspective of the “Other,” giving them a distinctive place in modern Japanese literature.

Chapter One focuses on Strange Tale of the Precepts for Women's Fan and Travels in the Colony, analyzing the identity of the “hontōjin.” Positioned as either “Chinese” or “Taiwanese,” their self-awareness is shown through the lingering traces of “Shina” and their difference from the “naichijin,” revealing the complexity of their sense of self. Chapter Two turns to Journey to the Sun Moon Lake and Musha, exploring how depictions of the “banjin” change over time. They are portrayed as people who uphold their traditions while also being shaped by mainland culture; outwardly they submit to colonial rule, but inwardly they carry tensions and resistance. Chapter Three examines Traveler and A Strange Story, considering the instability of “naichijin” identity. Though outwardly privileged, these characters appear as complex figures struggling with loneliness, conflict, and anxiety in the colonial setting, exposing the gap between imperial ideals and the realities of migration.

Through these portrayals, Satō Haruo’s Taiwan works illuminate the layered and unsettled nature of identity under colonial rule. By reexamining these texts, this study aims to offer a perspective that goes beyond mere exoticism.
