Many researchers abroad have conducted studies on sexual minority adolescents in substitute care systems, aiming to explore their experiences and assess whether current service methods meet their needs. However, no similar study exists in Taiwan, underscoring the importance of conducting such research within the domestic context. This study, therefore, conducted in-depth interviews with lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals who lived in residential facilities during their adolescence. Through these interviews, the study aimed to understand the interactions between LGB adolescents and professionals and peers within the facilities, as well as their efforts to access the necessary resources. The findings first introduced participants’ backgrounds and their pathways into residential facilities. The study then presented their decision-making processes regarding coming out in these settings, coping strategies for concealing sexual orientation, and perceptions of how professionals and peers addressed gender and sexuality issues. Participants’ reflections revealed a lack of gender-friendly resources in these environments. The study also highlighted the participants’ proactive efforts to fulfill their needs for self-exploration and to build intimate relationships, while facing the unwelcoming workers and restrictive facility rules. By exploring the experiences of LGB adolescents in residential care facilities, the study aimed to reconstruct how these adolescents were served. It further discussed their expectation and identified service gaps while in care. Through personal reflections on the residential care environment, the researcher sought to improve professional service methods and make residential facilities more inclusive and supportive environments for LGB adolescents. |
