This study uses a single-case qualitative design to show how Indonesia’s super-app GoJek harnesses an “Institutional Voids → Localization → Payment Flywheel” to scale rapidly in Southeast Asia and build a durable moat. It first identifies two pain points—Jakarta’s chronic congestion and widespread informal employment—that heighten passengers’ need for time efficiency and drivers’ need for steady income. Deep localization (multilingual interface, low-bandwidth mode, and cash/GoPay payments) then eases cultural and technical frictions, boosting retention. Finally, embedding GoPay in high-frequency services creates a self-reinforcing “transaction–payment–reward” loop resistant to imitation.
Following Robert K. Yin’s protocol, the study triangulates 2015–2024 annual reports, industry and policy documents, and six semi-structured interviews (three users, two drivers, one merchant), with role-based and longitudinal checks to strengthen validity. The findings confirm three hypotheses and integrate institutional-void and multi-sided-platform theories, filling a micro-level gap in super-app research.
Practically, a three-step assessment framework helps firms and regulators judge super-app replicability across markets and guides policy on regulatory sandboxes and driver social protection.
