| 摘要: | This case study explores the business expansion of J-venture, a Japanese private space exploration company, referred to as “J-venture”, with a focus on its strategic transition from payload transportation services to lunar data services. As global interest in lunar exploration intensifies, J-venture seeks to capitalize on the emerging demand for lunar data by offering the service to governments, research institutions, and potentially private companies. However, the company faces significant challenges due to high technological and market uncertainties in a nascent industry.
Drawing upon industry reports, academic literature, market analysis, and internal data, the study evaluates whether J-venture sustainably diversifies its business by leveraging its accumulated assets-including mission experience, engineering capabilities, and a global partnership network. It also incorporates theoretical insights from diversification strategy and industry emergence literature to examine how startups with limited resources can pursue business expansion in an early-stage market. The finding suggests that while the move into lunar data services is strategically aligned with global market trends and J-venture’s long-term vision, the transition poses high risks due to unresolved technical and market challenges. The study concludes that leveraging existing capabilities to reduce uncertainty, advocating for ecosystem development, and securing more stable financial resources are critical to making the data service model viable. This research contributes to the understanding of business model innovation among startups operating in high-uncertainty, deep-tech industries such as space exploration.
