Kan Yao-Ming's works feature richly constructed characters, emphasizing their life trajectories and familial memories. Many of his stories reflect on the past from a contemporary perspective, offering readers an opportunity to recognize social issues and historical events from the viewpoint of marginalized groups. In addition to being a writer, Kan has a diverse background—having worked as a teacher and journalist—and has long been active in various fields. These experiences have profoundly influenced the content and perspective of his literary works. Given this background, the characters in Kan’s writing—particularly his portrayals of female characters—reflect the multiple and complex issues present in contemporary society. Whether or not these women are the protagonists, they often play key roles in the narrative, revealing different dimensions of social reality. This study will focus on works set in postwar Taiwanese society, examining the portrayal of marginalization among different ethnic groups in contemporary Taiwan. The analysis will take female characters as the entry point, exploring their depiction through perspectives of gender, ethnicity, and their social roles both within and outside the family. Drawing on academic research from various fields, this study will also investigate how the author portrays marginalized female figures. Lastly, it will further analyze how these representations reflect the realities of modern Taiwanese society, and through examining narrative structure, character creation, and the arrangement of story endings, it will explore the author’s attitudes toward gender issues and his possible visions or hopes for the future. |
