This thesis mainly focuses on Hiromi Kawakami's early romance novels, including Monogatari ga hajimaru, Itoshii and Oboreru . The purpose of this thesis is to explore the conceptualization of "love" in Kawakami's early works, by analyzing the phenomena of "discommunication" and "discrepancies" depicted in romantic relationships within these works. This thesis is divided into 3 chapters: Chapter 1 centers on Hiromi Kawakami's debut work as a professional writer, the short story Monogatari ga hajimaru. It utilizes the theme of transformation to analyze the images of Yamada Yukiko and Hinagata, while also exploring the manifestation of miscommunication within their romantic relationship. Additionally, the love depicted in Monogatari ga hajimaru should be viewed as a process, in which Yamada Yukiko faces her inner self. Chapter 2 revolves around the novel Itoshii, examining the images of two sisters, Yurie and Marie. It attempts to explore the female images which they present within the context of their romantic relationships. Besides, it reveals how they navigate the "discrepancies" in their interactions with others while still maintaining their unique way of life centered on love. Chapter 3 focuses on eight stories in the short story collection Oboreru. This chapter is divided into three sections: "Women Lost in Relationships," "Women Dominated by Relationships," and "Women Trapped by Relationships". It examines the phenomenon of miscommunication between men and women. Furthermore, the chapter concludes by discussing Kawakami Hiromi's intended portrayal of the "The view of the end of love" , emphasizing that people engage with others solely through their own "desires" . Through the exploration of this thesis, the common characteristics of Hiromi Kawakami's early romance novels can be summarized in the following three points: First, the aim is not the realization of the ideal "eternal love" as defined by "romantic love" in Kawakami's works. Second, Kawakami tends to focus on the sense of conflict within sexual relationships, emphasizing the contradictions that arise in romantic relationships. Lastly, the love which Kawakami intends to depict can be seen as a process from possession to loss. Furthermore, the sense of "loneliness" triggered by the process of love can also be regarded as a recurring motif in Kawakami's early romance novels. |
