This study assesses the feasibility and environmental advantages of transitioning from pallet carton dividers to plastic dividers within the Indonesian metal packaging industry. It considers various factors, including sustainability, productivity, logistics, and compliance, with a particular focus on the environmental impact of packaging materials. Utilizing the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), the research evaluates and compares these factors, revealing that while plastic dividers may incur higher initial costs, they offer significant long-term benefits through their durability, lower environmental footprint, and improved functionality. The study is in alignment with Indonesia's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably in terms of waste reduction and land conservation by diminishing the reliance on raw materials such as trees, which are essential for producing carton dividers. Findings indicate that stakeholders place a high priority on attributes related to "Life on Land" and "Waste Reduction," reflecting a shift towards long-term sustainability objectives rather than focusing solely on immediate cost savings. This trend is consistent with global movements in sustainability, as businesses increasingly recognize the importance of incorporating environmental and social governance (ESG) considerations into their decision-making processes. While challenges persist, including the initial higher costs and the absence of local production for plastic dividers, the potential to decrease packaging waste and enhance recycling initiatives positions plastic dividers as a viable solution for the packaging sector. Ultimately, the research suggests that the adoption of plastic dividers can yield substantial economic and environmental advantages, supporting both operational efficiency and compliance with evolving sustainability regulations. Future studies are encouraged to investigate alternative decision-making methodologies to further refine this analysis and explore additional sustainable packaging options. |
