Every Day Gets a Little Closer: A Twice-Told Therapy This descriptive study explores the translator’s voice in terms of its textual traces and effects on narrative point of view through a case study of psychotherapeutic text. It takes from the narratological approach in assuming the ever-present translator’s voice, and draws on the stylistic approach for its model of point of view that focuses on specific linguistic manifestations associated with psychological, spatial, temporal and ideological point of view. The texts studied include Every Day Gets a Little Closer: A Twice-Told Therapy (1974) by the American psychiatrist Irvin Yalom and his pseudonymous patient, as well as its two Chinese translations Jihchien chinchin (《日漸親近》) (2004) and Jihi chinchin (《日益親近》) (2008). This study qualitatively analyzes the two translators’ rendering of three linguistic markers regarding modality, deixis and transitivity to account for their impact on narrative point of view and the representation of therapeutic relationship in the target texts. It exemplifies how the translator’s covert presence can be teased out through analyzing micro-level linguistic choices that collectively shift the narrator’s psychological, spatial, temporal and ideological position as one significant way in which the translator’s voice leaves its mark in translated narratives. |
